Furry Friends @ City of Rocks, Idaho

An interesting little adventure in our Truck Camper: All I can say is life happens!

Jerry and I were sitting at the table where we were enjoying a wonderful lunch (a peanut butter and jelly sandwich with Cheetos), Bruno sits next to me; usually he would be begging for a bite of my sandwich, but this time he was sitting right next to me watching the front door with a keen interest, which is when I heard a low growl from Bruno.  As I attempted to figure out what he was trying to alert me to. I was looking through the screen, I don't see anything? Then the rodent breaks through the screen, it was as if a squirrel got loose in the First Self Righteous Church of Pascagoula. We were running around trying to get rid of the rodent out of our camper while Bruno was ecstatic that he had a live squeaky toy loose and Jerry was just trying to figure out what the heck just happened. This situation was quite chaotic and unexpected. Jerry's reaction to the chipmunk’s sudden appearance was to grab the trash picker and throw it at me, then he grabbed our dog Bruno and threw him in the bathroom to keep him out of the way. Once Jerry opened the screen door, I was able to safely escort the chipmunk back outside. Needless to say, we were all quite shaken up by the experience, and Bruno was upset we threw his new little squeaky friend outside. Remember all this took place inside our small Truck Camper the floor space is about 25 Square feet. When living in a small area being in sync with your partner is crucial. This means being on the same page, understanding each other's needs and wants, and working together towards common goals. It requires good communication, compromise, and a strong level of trust and no one went head over tea kettle out the door! I take this as a win-win situation.

The City of Rocks National Reserve is a popular destination for rock climbers due to its unique and challenging granite rock formations. Located in south-central Idaho, it is also known as the Silent City of Rocks and is situated near the border of Utah. The reserve and adjacent state park, Castle Rocks, are composed primarily of granitic rock from the Oligocene Almo pluton and Archean Green Creek Complex.

The area gained popularity in the 1980s as a rock climbing hotspot, with many difficult routes developed by renowned climber Tony Yaniro (supposed to be one of the best rock climbers in the world). Today, it is home to over 1,000 traditional and bolt-protected routes, making it a must-visit for any rock climbing enthusiasts. One of the Rangers informed us that at certain times of the year they will have rock climbing lessons.

The unique landscape of the City of Rocks has been shaped by two distinct periods of granite intrusion into the Earth's crust. The majority of the spires are made of granite from the 28-million-year-old Almo pluton, while a few are composed of the 2.5 billion-year-old Green Creek Complex, known for containing some of the oldest rocks in the western United States. Through years of erosion, these granite formations have transformed into a captivating collection of amazingly beautiful and intriguing shapes.

This natural phenomenon is a unique and rare occurrence, making the City of Rocks a popular destination for geologists, hikers, and tourists alike. In addition to its geological significance, the California Trail also runs through the reserve, as the halfway mark and serves as a reminder of the historic significance of this area.

  1. I'd love to travel that part of the States but with the six month limit for visitors, it's hard to get there from Ontario; I'd have to leave when it was still winter here. Glad you got that chipmunk out of your camper. My dogs would freak.
